As we thought more about the supposed reference in Baring-Gould’s footnote to Chapter V of Sherlock Holmes of Baker Street, we realized something was up.

He cited Michael Sasanoff’s biography Seventy Years a Showman; London: Stodder & Houghton, 1923. Yet, we couldn’t find it anywhere online.
